My Chat with Saskia Maarleveld

Hello and welcome!

Today I have a lady whose voice is a marvel I discovered and enjoyed immensely while listening to her narrations of Claire Delacroix‘s stories.

Please welcome Saskia Maarleveld!

Saskia Maarleveld Headshot.jpg

Do you have a nickname?
My family and good friends call me Sask.

What is one word best describes you?
That is a tough one. I guess energetic, in both my personal life and my work. I don’t drink coffee, so a natural energy definitely keeps me going most days.

What makes you laugh out loud?
My sisters!

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
My mother’s perfume. Since she lives so far away, in New Zealand, sometimes she will mail me something with it sprayed on it so I have a little reminder of her!

Favourite place to spend time in.
I love the outdoors, so anywhere that I can sit on a porch and look out onto mountains and greenery is perfect for me.

Is there a genre that you refuse to read?
I don’t have much time to read for pleasure anymore, since I do it so much for work! But that means I am pretty picky in what I do read, which tends to be mystery/thrillers and fantasy, with some non fiction sprinkled in!

Audiobooks! What started them?
I listened to audiobooks a lot as a child. I am the eldest of 5 girls, and we listened in the car to keep us all quiet. Some of my favorites were Greek Myths narrated by Andrew Sachs, the old BBC version of the Beatrix Potter stories and a wonderful collection of Celtic Fairy Tales. I suppose this subconsciously gave me an appreciation and ear for the craft. I also have always loved reading and I was lucky that both parents read to me from a young age. My accent work has really helped me get my foot in the door at a lot of places. One day I was able to audition for a New Zealand novel being produced by Recorded Books in Manhattan. I got that project and went from there!

Is there a genre that you would not narrate?
Not yet…but who knows…

If you could choose another career what would it be?
Probably a detective or a surgeon.

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
I just like to make sure to be a clear storyteller through my narration and portrayal of characters. If I can do that then I’m happy and have done my job.

What is next in your narrating work?
I have a bunch of projects to finish up in the next month before I head home for the holidays. Lots of YA, fantasy and romance to keep me busy!

I am looking forward to listen to more in the future. Wishing you much success. Thank you for spending a little time in my corner of the blogging world.

To start you on your listening journey, Ms. Maarleveld is giving away an audiobook  of the “Blood Fire” , book 1 in the Blood Destiny series by Helen Harper.

Mack might be, to all intents and purposes, a normal looking human, but she lives with a pack of shapeshifters in Cornwall in rural England after being dumped there by her mother when she was just a young child. She desperately wants to be accepted by her surrogate family, not least because a lot of them hate her for merely being human, but for some reason her blood just won’t allow the transformation to occur. With a terrible temper to match her fiery red hair, Mack is extraordinarily useful in a fight, and when her pack alpha is brutally and abruptly murdered, she swears vengeance. Unfortunately, his murder also draws in the Brethren—the leaders of the shapeshifter world—who will slaughter everyone in Mack’s small rural pack if they discover her true identity. Unfortunately Corrigan, the green-eyed muscle-bound Lord Alpha of the Brethren, doesn’t let much slip by him…

Winner will be chosen by Sexy Mr. Random after 3pm EST on Monday, November 30, 2015. GOOD LUCK!

My Chat with AR Von

Hello and welcome!

Today I have a lady who I met before she became a famous published author. She is awesome and a riot, we shared many giggles over the years…. and she actually made me like zombie books… well.. almost-zombie actually 😉 I even had Pete, my “6 foot 3, and built like a well-oiled machine” hunk book boyfriend, for a chat over on my old blog. Will have to get him over to this one soon and have Tank join in too 😉

Please welcome AR Von!

ME-AR Smile.jpg

A.R. was born and raised in Bronx, NY and is the oldest daughter of two girls. She holds an Associate’s Degree in Computer Science and Information Technology, which was only briefly used.

She’s a mother of two entertaining teen boys (as well as a lovely fawn Chihuahua, whom she considers her furry daughter.) She’s also a wife to a delightfully handsome and amazingly funny man-beast. She loves anything dragon and fantasy related. In her free time she enjoys exercising, listening to music, hiking, cooking, dancing and writing. She also loves a great adventure in and out of a book!

She writes to free her mind of its constant wondering and priceless clutter. She thrives on the fact she can share some of it with readers that have the same passion for a great story.

She also loves to hear from her reader’s and chat away, so feel free to reach out to her any time.

9-15-allbooks.jpg

Her books are varied genres, my fave is the Wunder series, the almost-zombie series I mentioned above. Love the trailer made by the talented Leanore Elliott at Wicked Muse Productions.

And now onto the grilling… err… I mean chat…

Do you have a nickname?
‘Babe’ from my hubby and ‘mama dukes’ from my boys and ‘hey, hey you’ from strangers

What is one word best describes you?
Determined

What makes you laugh out loud?
Anything spontaneously funny … my pets get me almost daily.

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Evergreen trees, the scent reminds me of the peace and family gathering I once experienced during the holidays when I was little. Boy do I miss those days sigh

Favourite place to spend time in.
The beach, when I can get there. At home, it’s my “dragon den” that you’ll find me in most.

Is there a genre that you refuse to read?
Most historical non-fiction, I’m sorry for those fans of the genre, but what I’ve read has been truly depressing and puts me to sleep zzz

Writing! What started it?
Poetry! I started off at about 5 or 6 writing poetry for my mother. She once was my sun, moon and stars.

If you could choose another career what would it be?
I have two I’ve thought of in the past, drill sergeant or a female wrestler. I just love the thrill of either one LOL

Audiobooks! Any plans to have any of your books in audio format?
Maybe once more people request them from me. So far, I’ve had none.
I would love to hear Pete’s voice sigh

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
Some does. One example is my based on a true story short: Listen, Just Once. It gives a look inside of an abused child’s mind, how she deals with it and how much she was “listened to”. I wrote it with hopes to give some out there holding in their past, or their present inside to let it out, raise their voice and move forward in life. Life is too short, and that’s too much pain to hold onto to truly live a happy life. I honestly hope the story helped even one person

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your books?
Wow, I say my aim is for a diverse audience as I’ve written a few genres to date. Yes, most is paranormal, but I also have erotic, erotic thriller, contemporary romance and am adding on to the list as we speak ;)
The reason why I do this? Well, why should I only allow my mind to express one single thing when it’s packed with so much to offer so many? I just can’t bring myself to do it and hope my readers find enjoyment in the variety that’s offered to them.

What is next in your writing?
I have a few in the works and I just released a paranormal romance titled Reap What You Sow.

Reap promo7.jpg

Yes, it sounds like it may be frightening and gory, but it’s not. It’s a sweet—different type of paranormal romance that also helped me to express one of my loves … you’ll have to read it to see for yourself hee hee
You are such a tease!!

Thank you so much for having me! I always feel at home in your company hugs

It is always a pleasure chatting with you Ava! I will be waiting for Pete and Tank to drop by 😉 Say hello to Wunder for me!

Elven Chronicles’ Celebration of Life 2015 novella

SBTL-meme.jpg

It has been three years since Branith has been home and a few of the Princes from the Free Lands have come with him. Things have changed and they are all quick to note the obvious ones. The young girls he remembered as cute little toddlers and scamps are developing curves, and he is suddenly feeling very protective. Where did that come from?

As Elves gather for the celebration, Daroth finds his Kingdom is being invaded by what seems like every high-ranking Elven family in the Empire. There are toddlers everywhere! He would ask where they all came from, but their ages point at only one possible answer: their conceptions can be traced back to the time when Gabriel and Eden conjured their spell in the High Elven Kingdom. It reminds him of when their children were toddlers, and with that in mind, he is ready to enjoy the party.

Can it be that simple?

My Chat with Deborah Cooke

Hello and welcome!

Today I am so happy to have one of my most fave authors whom I had the honour to meet in real life too. A wonderful lady, classy and beautiful inside and out.

Please welcome Deborah Cooke!

I fell in love with Ms. Cooke’s Pyr years and years ago and had the pleasure of having their leader for a chat back in  May.

TheDragonfireBooks The Dragon Diaries

Then I recently discovered the medieval romances published under her alias, Claire Delacroix. When I told her at the book signing that I’ve written off the medieval era totally, she just smiled and told me to try it anyway.

box1 box2 box3 box4

I think she knew… I have to tell you, I fell in love with her characters and can’t get enough of them. I listen to them in audio format, and Saskia Maarleveld‘s voice totally captures the listener and brings the story to vivid life.

Deb CookeBestselling and award-winning author Deborah Cooke has published over fifty novels and novellas, including historical romances, fantasy romances, fantasy novels with romantic elements, paranormal romances, contemporary romances, urban fantasy romances, time travel romances and paranormal young adult novels. She writes as herself, Deborah Cooke, as Claire Delacroix, and has written as Claire Cross. She is nationally bestselling, #1 Kindle Bestselling, KOBO Bestselling, as well as a USA Today and New York Times’ Bestselling Author.

clairedelacroix_thebeauty_200Her Claire Delacroix medieval romance, The Beauty, was her first book to land on the New York Times List of Bestselling Books.
Deborah was the writer-in-residence at the Toronto Public Library in 2009, the first time TPL hosted a residency focused on the romance genre, and she was honored to receive the RWA PRO Mentor of the Year Award in 2012. She’s a member of Romance Writers of America and of Novelists Inc.

Deborah thinks a lot about publishing and writing, and also knits too much.

Check out her blog where she posts about her beautiful knitting projects among book news and releases.

Here are my faves.

hebrides2 jasperswirl

Do you have a nickname?
No.

What is one word best describes you?
Creative.

What makes you laugh out loud?
Our dog. She is a bit goofy, but mostly it’s her joy that makes me laugh. It doesn’t hurt that she “talks” back all the time. We have these very funny conversations, mostly when I think she should do something and she disagrees – or when I take too long to get ready for our daily walk and she feels the need to complain about it.

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Both vanilla and roses are very evocative for me. Vanilla makes me think of fresh baking and all the coziness of a kitchen filled with good conversation. Roses make me think of gardens, summertime and romantic heroines.

Favourite place to spend time in.
Other than my office, which is a little sanctuary and the place where my characters talk to me, I love to spend time in my garden. The weeds always have me outnumbered but it’s quite peaceful to either work out there or just sit. We have a lot of guests – birds, butterflies, bees – and I like to watch them as well. Sometimes in the summer, I merge both and move into the garden to write.

Is there a genre that you refuse to read?
No. I’ll read pretty much anything. It’s not unusual for visitors to the house to find our collection of books “eclectic” (because, yes, we have a lot of print books.) There’s an old saying that a good library should contain something to offend everyone and I like to think ours has achieved that.

Writing! What started it?
I always wrote, probably because there were characters in my imagination who demanded that their stories be told. Some of them are quite persistent. The amazing thing is that no matter how many books I write, the line of characters never gets any shorter.

It took quite a while for me to consider publishing my work, because that’s not why I write. The more important thing to me is to tell the stories, than to think about marketing them. Once I decided to pursue publication, it took about two years of rejection letters for me to sell my first book. Over the years, I learned a lot about marketing and publishing, and now I’m very glad to be indie publishing. It lets me control what is important to me, and not worry so much about other people’s priorities.

If you could choose another career what would it be?
I like to bake, so maybe I’d be a pastry chef. I see those cakes go by on Facebook of dragons curled around wedding cakes and think “hmmmmmm.” One day maybe I’ll give one a try.

Audiobooks! What started them?
I think audiobooks are really interesting, and they’re also a growing market. I held off on having my books produced in audio for the longest time because the process seemed so overwhelming. What accent? Should the narrator be male or female? How should all the characters sound? I was lucky to connect with Brick Shop Audio very early, and have been working steadily with them. They have a lot of experience (and remind me when to breathe) and also have access to a lot of talent. They were the ones to suggest Saskia Maarleveld as a narrator, when I mentioned that there were so many characters in many scenes of my books. She differentiates them all brilliantly so has done all of the Jewels of Kinfairlie medieval romances and is contracted to do all of the True Love Brides medieval romances. They should all be done by the end of the year.

For the Champions of Saint Euphemia, I wanted to have a male narrator, and they suggested Tim Gerard Reynolds. His audition blew me away, and I’m so looking forward to hearing his narrations of these books. The plan is for the first two in the series to be done by the end of the year.

This is part of the new plan. The idea is that going forward, the audio editions of my new books will be available closer to the publication date of the print and digital editions. It’s a lot of work, but it’s fun.

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
Maybe that love conquers all?

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your books?
Well, I don’t have a specific audience in mind, beyond people who already like my books, when I sit down to write. I do tend to write long series with many continuing characters, and have heard from readers that they like being able to “move into” the world of any given series and stay there for a while. All of my stories tend to mix action and adventure with the romance, and some of them have a bit of mystery or some paranormal elements as well.

I’ve noticed over the years that my readers are mostly women, although there are men reading Dragonfire, in particular. Their ages vary depending on the sub genre of my work, but some read all of it – which is a very exciting thing! I hope they read my books because they enjoy them.

What is next in your writing?
2016 is going to be a crazy-busy year. I seem to be adding new projects to my plate every time I turn around. A big part of that comes from a transition: this year, I completed my series that had been cut short by publishers. The True Love Brides (almost) finishes the story of the children of Kinfairlie – there are eight of them, and only three had their stories told in the Jewels of Kinfairlie trilogy. The True Love Brides told four more, and shut the portals to Fae at Ravensmuir and Kinfairlie. I also finished my Dragonfire series with Firestorm Forever this year, the big finish. It really was a big finish, and ended up taking place over a year, having three romances in it and being twice the length of other Dragonfire novels. In 2014, I also published Abyss, which is Tupperman’s story, because he was the one character in my future-set dystopian romance series who didn’t get his HEA.

So, The Crusader’s Bride, which was published in July and is the first book in my Champions of Saint Euphemia series of medieval romances is also the first new project I’ve started in ten years. That’s pretty exciting stuff. Also, digital publishing makes more projects feasible: one of the things I’ve just decided to do is add a fifth story to the Champions series. The Crusader’s Handfast will be Radegunde’s story and will fill in some of the gaps between the books. It’ll also be offered in free instalments to my newsletter subscribers, then available as a whole book next July.

I’m also launching a new contemporary romance series in June 2016, which starts with Simply Irresistible. In addition, my DragonFate paranormal romance series will launch in 2016. The first book is Hot Blooded but I’ve yet to decide whether it will be linked books, linked novellas, or a huge serialization. The format will become clear as I write more of it – then the covers can be done and the release schedule established.

There’s a lot of new work coming, and I’m excited about the year ahead!

I am looking forward to more! Thank you Ms. Cooke for chatting with me.

Al’s Chat with Cynthia

Hello and welcome!

Please welcome my awesome friend Al who brought one of her book girlfriends.

Al: What is your full name?
Cynthia Leighton

Al: Do you have a nickname?
Cynthia: Cyn, or some people just call me Leighton

Al: What is one word that best describes you?
Cyn laughs  That’s sort of an invitation for ego, isn’t it? But I’ll play … um, smart.

Al: Describe what you are wearing now to our readers.
Cynthia: Black, bootcut, stretch jeans; black, crewneck, long-sleeve sweater; Frye harness boots

harness_12r-273x258source

me: I looooove those boots, I’ve been looking for a pair for myself in chocolate brown.

Al: Do you think the author portrayed you accurately?
Cynthia: Absolutely. She says I’m beautiful and strong, and that I fight for the people I love, and for myself. And that I’m basically a kickass chick with a sense of humor. I’ll take that!
Al: And don’t forget, a true role model to all the women out there. Girl, you are an inspiration!

Al: What makes you laugh out loud?
Cynthia: I’m a cynic, so dry, sometimes sarcastic, humor is my thing. And I do love teasing Raphael. He’s still trying to keep up with me.
Al: You are perfect for him and this is a first time I’m actually taking a woman’s side and meaning it.

Al: What is your favourite dessert?
Cynthia: Chocolate anything. No nuts.

Dessert-Recipe-Chocolate-TrufflesCROPPED
source

me: Then you will love these chocolate truffles I made for you with Irish Cream.

Al: What is your favourite drink?
Cynthia: Vodka. Mostly on the rocks.

Al: What is your greatest fear?
Cynthia: Losing Raphael, especially if I lose him because I couldn’t save him. It’s my nightmare.
Al: You and me girl.

Al: What is your favourite colour?
Cynthia: Black, really. But let’s say green, because it looks good on me, and Raphael likes it.

Al: What do you wear when you go to sleep?
Cynthia: Nothing. Unless I’m pissed at Raphael, then I’ll wear panties or a short nightgown. But it never lasts. He strips it away as soon as he wakes up, whether I’m pissed or not. He’s pushy that way.

Al: What is the perfect romantic date?
Cynthia: Just the two of us—Raphael and me—on a moonlit patio overlooking the water, sharing a big cushioned lounge chair, with a fire in the fire pit. No phones, no bodyguards, no one to call him away from me.

Al: How ticklish are you? Where are you ticklish?
Cynthia: I’m not very ticklish. My ribs a little, the bottoms of my feet. But not really.

Al: What’s your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Cynthia: The briney, wet scent of the ocean. Because it means “home” to me.

Al: When you look at a man what catches your interest?
Cynthia: Intellect is the most important quality for me. That look in a man’s eye that tells you there’s a good brain in there. And then, I like them tall, dark, and handsome. Which pretty much describes Raphael.

Al: Do you have somebody in your life now?
Cynthia: Raphael, of course! He’s the love of my life, the only guy I’ll ever need. The only one I’ve ever wanted.
Al: He is one of a kind! Love your man and so obsessed with him.

Al: What one word best describes him?
Cynthia: Mine. laughing But seriously, one word could never been enough to describe Raphael. He’s larger than life. He sucks the air out of a room. He’s beautiful, brilliant, strong and sexy.
Al with a dreamy sigh I agree.
me: I really have to meet him now.

Al: Is your book part of a series? What does the future hold for the readers of the series?
Cynthia: My story really covers all of the books, since Raphael is the center of the North American vampire community, and that’s what the books are about. But the first two books are the story of how Raphael and I met, and finally got together. The series is Vampires in America, and the 10th book will release on November 30th. In the 9th book, the European vampires launched their first strike against us, trying to take out Raphael, because he’s the strongest vampire on the continent. In Book #10, the vampire wars continue with an invasion from inside Mexico. It introduces a new, powerful vampire, Christian Duvall, who wants to be the new Lord of the South.
Al: I’m excited for the South! Hope to see you and Raphael in Mexico!

me: Thank you Al for introducing Cynthia to us and thank you Cynthia for visiting my corner of the blogging world. Looking forward to reading the stories.

Thanks for dropping by today and I hope you enjoyed the chat. I would like to thank Al for introducing Cynthia to us and Ms. Reynolds for writing the stories.

VampiresAmerica-collage

Cynthia Leighton hails from the Vampires of America series by D. B. Reynolds.

Check out this video for the series:

Raphael blurb:

Malibu, California-home to rock-and-roll gods and movie stars, the beautiful, the rich . . . and vampires.

Powerful and charismatic, Raphael is a Vampire Lord, one of the few who hold the power of life and death over every vampire in existence. Thousands call him Master and have pledged absolute loyalty on their very lives. But when, in a brazen and deadly daylight attack, a gang of human killers kidnaps the one female vampire he’d give his life for, Raphael turns to a human investigator to find his enemies before it’s too late.

Cynthia Leighton is smart, tough and sexy, a private investigator and former cop who’s tired of spying on cheating spouses and digging out old bank accounts. When Raphael asks for her help in tracking down the kidnappers, Cyn’s happy to accept. But she soon realizes her greatest danger comes not from the humans, but from Raphael himself.

Battling Russian mobsters and treacherous vampires, and betrayed by those they trusted, Cyn and Raphael find themselves fighting for their lives while caught up in a passion of blood and violence that is destined to destroy them both.
