My first author-reader conference!

Hello and welcome!

I am still grinning from two weekends ago when I attended my first ever author-reader conference at the Romancing the Capital in Ottawa, organized and sponsored in part by Eve Langlais and other fabulous authors, helped by her awesome minions.

RTCbanner02_300dpi

I didn’t know what to expect, I was a bit nervous, but a whole lot excited. The closer the date came, the bigger the excitement and as usual I thought of my costume on Wednesday night, I was up until 3 am to get it done o_O I was the book boyfriend sorceress, had a whip too so I can keep them in check 😉 Went to work in the morning, then took off a bit early. My friend, Carolann, came with me. The previous post on my blog was my chat with her. She is a good friend, she put up with my endless chatter and bubbling as the event came closer ( we work together! ) and she drove the whole way to Ottawa, bless her heart… and back too!

I met a lot of new authors to me, among them Reece Butler, Ashlyn Chase, Viola Grace, Cynthia St. Aubin, Trinity Blacio, Jessica E Subject, Leah Braemel, Robyn Peterman, Kellie Kamryn, H. A. Fortman, and many more. I met a few whose book I read and looooove: Deborah Cooke, Zoe York, Eve Langlais.

Zoe York has been a guest on my blog before, we had a chat recently. I also had Liam, one of my book boyfriends from one of her series.

I will have Deborah Cooke‘s Erik, who is my Pyr book boyfriend coming soon for a chat *sigh*

I am hoping I can choose my book boyfriend from one of Eve Langlais‘s books, but I still have lots to catch up in her series 😉

I bought quite a few books at the signing held the Saturday of the event… a few are not in the picture because they were e-books or surfaced later from the many folds of my luggage…

bookBought

… and also received a few as gifts 😀 The top middle one is Erik’s book, which I read before but this one is a signed gift from Ms. Cooke and I will treasure it forever.

booksGifted

SQUEEEEEE  Sorry, I’ve been doing that a lot, I mean A LOT 😀

I am looking forward to get lost in each story and find a few more book boyfriends along the way.

Met lots of readers, bloggers. Some brought their daughters, some their grannies and some their husbands. Cool, eh? The costumes at both dinner parties were from awesome to cool, we had a blast! Some chose not to wear costumes or only partial ones, but that was ok too. We took part of discussion panels during the day, where we got to ask questions and listened to authors share their insight in their respective genres or had fun doing crafts, naughty ones ;), or do puzzles or play games for prizes. There was a lot of laughter and cheers all over the place.

AAAAH THE MEMORIES!!! Check out the pics on the event page. I think the giddy feeling I had at the event will stay with me for a long time, it felt really good being among those who love books as much as I do. So few of my real life friends read, some do not read at all and I see when I talk about books ( true, I do talk a lot about books ) their eyes start to glaze over LOL

I am so happy that I found many fabulous ladies on the web from all over the world who love books, read the same books as I do and a few have become really good friends. We support each other in times of joy, sorrow and everything in between. Great ladies, I hope I will get the chance to meet them face to face one day.

The planning for the next event in May, 2016 is started so don’t miss out, here is  the link to get your ticket. Early bird prices are still going, but not for long. I will be there, wouldn’t miss it for anything!

I took with me a lot of swag I had extra on hand to share with fellow readers from M. A. Abraham, Sharon Hamilton, Cara Covington, Heather Rainier, Brandy Walker, Michelle M. Pillow, Melissa Schroeder, Diana Cosby, it was swept up in less than an hour … ALL OF IT. Also put together a basket from Sharon Hamilton that was put in the Friday night event’s draw, the lucky winner was sitting beside me at the dinner table, talk about a small world. There were a lot of happy readers on both days I tell you.

I brought back a lot of swag, some of it already on its way to my biggest supporters here on my blog and I have two bags left which I would like to share with two readers, all you have to do is comment on this post what kind of swag do you like the best and which bag, red or green, would you choose. As you can see in the picture below, there is a lot of swag in each bag, most of it from the event and a few of what I have left extra in my own stash. No chocolates though, those I kept for myself 🙂

My Chat with Carolann Murtland!

Hello and welcome!

Today I have chatting with me a good friend of mine. Those of you who followed my other blog might remember I wrote a post about her called “Courage” a few years back.

Please welcome Carolann Murtland!

Carolann

Carolann writes wonderful poetry, her words are powerful and her poems show a wide range of emotions. Reading the many emails and letters she received from all over the world, I can say that her poems touched a lot of hearts.

She calls me her “Nudge” 😛

Here are the covers I designed for the 3 volumes.

Heartfelt Overflow-cover PrintPassionateExpressions-cover

Check out the website I designed for her and see what others have to say about her poems.

Below is one of the poems that is part of the third book, Carolann wrote it for my wedding anniversary years ago. We spent it not in Cuba as planned, but in the hospital, where hubby ended up 3 days before the trip and underwent emergency surgery. We both cried when I read it to him!

OurSpecialDay-poem

Read on and find out what we chatted about.

Do you have a nickname?
Well, where do I start? I have a few. One of my friends loves to call me Hot Mama. I call her that 😉
Trouble, ChickiePoo and Sam (I was suppose to be a boy LOL ). Bet my parents are thinking about that one now.

What is one word best describes you?
Passionate. I am passionate at everything I do. I wear my heart on my sleeve. I will stick up for the elderly or children if I think they are being abused of any sort even if I don’t know them.

What makes you laugh out loud?
Watching my grandkids do something funny. I have 9 of them so it is very entertaining. I also love comedy shows or a good joke.

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Favourite smell is a new baby. Just snuggle in and smell the innocence and softness. You can smell the miracle of life.

Favourite place to spend time in.
One of my favourite places is anywhere where my daughters and grandchildren are. Another place is on the beach looking out into the vastness of the ocean. The water always brings calmness to me.

Is there a genre that you refuse to read?
I love to read even though I don’t seem to have enough time for fun reading. I call “fun reading” good novels. I am always taking courses of interest or reading self-help, spiritual books, etc. I do not read Horror.

Writing! What started it?
I have always written in journals but didn’t think they were important to keep. After Russ, my husband, passed away I would write my emotions down to put in the local paper every year on the anniversary. One Saturday morning while I was relaxing with my cup of tea I felt a nagging feeling that I had to write my story of loss to help others. So with my tea in hand I sat at the computer and starting writing details of the night which changed my life completely. My memoires were born but not published yet.

My poetry was created by writing out my emotions or listening to others and putting on paper their emotions. It started with my grief counselor reminding me about journaling. A few family members read some of the poems and thought they were good and would help others deal with grief. A couple close friends also read them and encouraged me to publish them.

If you could choose another career what would it be?
If I had a chance to choose another career it would be a professional photographer. I love to write but I also love photography. My family calls me The Paparazzi.

Audiobooks! Any plans to have any of your books in audio format?
I really never thought about putting poetry in audiobooks but now you have opened my mind for thought.

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
My poetry collection is called Voiced Emotions. The first volume is Heartfelt Overflow and it is about grief, whether it is loss, separation, divorce or even an argument. Voiced Emotions, the second volume, is poetry on general emotions. Passionate Expressions, third volume and recent release, are words of love. Our emotions demand to be felt and I write out those emotions.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your books?
I feel anyone could be my audience.

What is next in your writing?
I have been writing “My Brick Wall, My Journey through Grief”. It has been over 10 years so even though my journey of life continues, it is time to complete this book.

Thank you Carolann for being my friend, almost 12 years now, you know I do appreciate you.

Thank you for joining us today and I hope you enjoyed the chat.

My Chat with Sharon Hamilton!

Hello and welcome!

Today I have one of my fave authors who’s books I love, I had quite a few chats with my various book boyfriends from her various series.

Please welcome Sharon Hamilton!

Sharon-inNashville2014Sharon-april2015

Sharon’s NYT and USA Today bestselling novels are almost-erotic Navy SEAL stories of the SEAL Brotherhood.

SEALBrotherhoodbannerHer characters follow a spicy road to redemption through passion and true love. All of her SEAL Brotherhood Series are available in audio book. She has maintained an Amazon top 100 author status in Romantic Suspense for since the end of 2012.

goldenvampires

Her Golden Vampires of Tuscany are not like any vamps you’ve read before, since they don’t have to go to ground, and can walk around in the full light of the sun. Honeymoon Bite, Book 1 of the Golden Vampires of Tuscany Series, has earned the Amazon designation of #1 Gothic Romance. It and Book 2 in the series, Mortal Bite are both available on audio as well.

theguardians

Her Guardian Angels struggle with the human charges they are sent to save, often escaping their vanilla world of Heaven for the brief human one. You won’t find any of these beings in any Sunday school class. All three books in this popular series are also in print and audio formats.

A lifelong organic gardener, Sharon lives with her husband in the Wine Country of Northern California, where most of her stories take place. When she’s not writing, she’s getting verra verra dirty in the mud, or wandering Farmer’s Markets looking for new Heirloom varieties of vegetables and flowers.

Do you have a nickname?
That’s a funny story. Before I was married, a couple of my former boyfriends called me “Hot Lips” as in Hot Lips Hoolihan from Mash. I guess I was a little suppressed in those days, and with a whole lotta sexual tension!! Although I never had a boyfriend named Frank.

What is one word best describes you?
I would have to say passionate. That means a lot of things. I’m passionate about my writing, of course. Passionate about being discoverable and reachable to my readers and friends, and passionate about loving our military men and women. Common in my books is the theme of being grateful for what we’ve been given, either by luck or paid for by the blood of others, but I try to live a colorful, passionate life chock full of experiences so that I don’t waste the freedom I’ve been given. We are very lucky indeed to be able to write what we want, sell what we want, go where we want and live a lifestyle most the world would envy. People died so that could happen and I never want to take it lightly.

What makes you laugh out loud?
As you know, I like to write with some humor. I think funny things that happen during sex scenes, or between couples I love reading and writing. Things like Fredoisms:

Tyler ran to the window ledge, searching outside and examining the glass at the floor. “Blood all over here. She’s probably out there.” He pointed to the graveyard of broken things. “Judging from the amount of blood, she won’t get far.”
Rory whipped past Tyler, nearly toppling the man, struggling to get his frame through the window opening. He heard someone chuckling behind him, but he was far from caring. He heard Fredo make a comment he didn’t have time to stop and appreciate fully.
“Man. Those two get married? Remind me not to get that bitch knives for a wedding present. She’ gonna go all Bobbitt on him if she gets pissed.”

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Well, of course I like lemony gel for the shower. Lavender for the bubble bath. Cinnamon and Nutmeg for my cappuccinos. Chocolate any time of day for any reason. Roses, deep deep red roses and the South African Lillies that last so long and smell so divine. I usually have a big flower garden and I love roses, lilac, even herbs.

I wear L’Interdit, a cologne originally designed for Audrey Hepburn (her own formula) and released later after her death. I bought a case of the “old formula” you can’t buy anymore and wear it and think of the lovely, graceful, passionate woman she was. My daughter looks so much like her, too. When I think of her, I think of a woman who did a lot with a little, who lived a passionate life and wasn’t afraid to fall deeply, madly in love with honorable men who treated her like a queen. That’s romance for me.

Favourite place to spend time in.
In between books, I wander nurseries and love to tour community gardens. I have missed mine the last 3 years. Hope to have one again this year. I can also get lost in a yard or fabric shop.

Is there a genre that you refuse to read?
BDSM, M/M F/M. I’m open minded, but I just don’t like reading something I don’t feel. I can allude to things, hint or perhaps make the reader think it’s going there, but there are others who do that much better than I. I haven’t explored all the ways a man and a woman can have sex, or where yet! Maybe some day when I need the variety?? Dunno.
(Oh boy I’m getting into trouble here…)

Writing! What started it?
Terrible house fire in 2008 and we lost nearly everything. We also nearly lost everything in our real estate business then. I just had to do something that was creative, in order to heal. I started writing expecting I would be living the rest of my life in a rented house with an older pickup truck and 2 dogs, from the beautiful property we had before the fire. It was heartbreaking to see it all go away.

However, I was blessed with good fortune, and through three years of awful tough wartime-like fighting, were able to overcome it and come out the other side better than before. Now I live in a new home on the same property. It’s taken time, but it’s finally to the stage of getting my gardens back. Soon. I’ve had to be patient, and trust in a lot of people and shed a lot of tears, but writing really helped me.

Now I can live on my writing, which is an even greater blessing. To be able to do what you love and be able to support yourself doing it is a real joy for me. And to get to work with such wonderful people along this road – just the best ever.

No more real estate or corporate for me. But it taught me how to fight, how not to give up, how to learn when to say yes and no, who to trust and how to be consistent. I’m a self-starter and always have been. I got to meet and interview very famous people in my career, did some big public speaking events and “coached” a lot of people over the years. It’s helped me in my writing career, but I still had to start out all over. But I’ve learned to hire people to do things you don’t know how to do to get to the top. Hang with the winners and not worry about the rest. Show up. Pay attention. Tell the Truth. Don’t get attached to the outcome.

If you could choose another career what would it be?
When I wrote SEAL The Deal, that nursery is right around the corner from my house. I could putter in the ground all day long.

I also love color. Interior design. Only if my clients loved red as much as I did!! My husband used to build condominiums and subdivisions, and I would decorate the models with all kinds of eclectic things. My house today has things from temples in India, an old “flower boat” from there, a cabinet from a pink palace in Indonesia, rugs from Morocco and Tunisia, and oil paintings from everywhere. I love to travel, and collect unusual things. So, having a store to be able to buy more things and travel, well, that would be a great job.

I had thought one day I’d have a store called “Red” with everything in it red. Everything!

Audiobooks! What started them?
My friend, Bella Andre, told me about hers. Bob Mayer told me he thought they were going to be the next big thing, but I just had so much on my plate, I didn’t know where to start.

Audible came to me and wanted to do my SEALs, and offered to get me started. They pointed to the interview spots on ACX, I listened to narrators and eventually picked 10 I liked, including JD, and sent off a sample for them to read. Everyone did a great job, and I thought I was going to have a hard time choosing, but then I got J.D.’s and I was over the top. I knew I’d found that voice I heard in my head while I wrote. It was like synchrodestiny, like Deepok talks about.

That relationship has developed into a lifelong friendship, which is another unexpected benefit. I have so many things planned for the future with J.D. We brainstorm so many things, and probably won’t have time for a quarter of them, but it’s fun to share this part of my life, my writing and storytelling life, with someone else so closely. It’s intimate (but safe, lol). And it’s life giving for me.

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
True Love Heals In The Gardens OF The Heart. I hope that I will always be a hopeless romantic.

Who is your intended audience and why should they read your books?
I think there isn’t enough real genuine caring and passion in this world. I would hope that I give someone a few hours of pleasure. Although most my readers are women, I’ve had men who love what I write. Especially if they enjoy and understand women. It is the form of reality we need more of. We call TV and radio or the newspaper “reality” but it’s not. It’s what someone else thought you should hear/read. If I’m going to be in a fantasy land, I want to be in some place where I feel good, where the woman always wins and there’s always a Happily Ever After…

What is next in your writing?
I’ve had to adjust my schedule a bit. Got crazy with all the boxed sets and releases over 2013 and 2014. So, got my next SEAL book, SEAL’s Code coming out 6/30/15, then my Gideon (hybrid vampire/guardian angel) coming in the late summer, hope to have another Golden Vampire series, one of the Jett Brothers this time, and probably another SEAL book in the winter. Plus two more new novellas for the boxed sets I’ll be in this year. Believe it or not, that’s lighter than what I accomplished last year: 5 full length books, 3 novellas, 5 boxed sets.

I cant wait to read/listen to more of your books. Thank you for spending time in my little corner of the blogging world.

Thanks so much for having me. Love to hear from readers, so if you sign up for my newsletter, you’ll get all caught up. We are doing a lot of fun stuff this year, new covers, a new series perhaps for 2016 and some podcasting/audio things I can’t talk about.

Come see me! Stay in touch!

My Chat with Rebecca Cook

Hello and welcome!

My guest today is a lady whose voice I came to love while listening to audiobooks by Michelle M. Pillow, a voice that is absolutely wonderful, voices she creates for the different characters, male AND female, and their emotions are portrayed beautifully!

Welcome Rebecca Cook!

Thanks for coming to my little corner of the blogging worldI just love this pic, you look like you are a sunny, fun person to be around.
This was on the set of John Carpenter’s The Ward. We got to burn down a house!

RebeccaCook-1

Do you have a nickname?
Well, my family calls me Becky and in high school some friends gave me the moniker Roadkill. No real good story behind it, but it did stick for a while. Sadly.

What is one word best describes you?
Storyteller

What makes you laugh out loud?
So many things!!!  I am a cat person, so the internet videos get me, like the rest of the world, but usually it is the things that come out of my nieces’ and nephews’ mouths.  Kids are hilarious!

popcorn-movie-wallpaper-1680x1050-578x200

What is your favourite smell? What does it remind you of?
Popcorn.  I love the smell of movie theaters.  I do a lot of work in the film industry and as an actor and a filmmaker, some of my favorite moments have been in movie theaters.  Movies had a lot to do with who I am and where I am today.  Plus, hot buttered popcorn is amazing.

Favourite place to spend time in.
My bed!  But, if I’m leaving the house, send me to the Oregon Coast any day. 🙂

Is there a genre that you refuse to read/narrate?
Self help books or sales books. I’m really not a non-fiction reader, in general, but my voice does not belong in a self help book. I would probably narrate one if I believed in it, but I have a hard time thinking I’d fit well in that genre.

Audiobooks! What started them?
Well, I have always loved acting and when I was younger, I thought I’d never make it as an actor, so I’d work in radio and enjoy a life of community theatre.  I have degrees in both radio and theatre and have actually used them both quite a lot to pay my bills, thankfully.  My dad is a big fan of books and especially audiobooks, so when I had the opportunity to audition for a local company, it was a pretty amazing opportunity. I had no idea that I would love it as much as I do.
I am glad you did and it really shows you enjoy your work when listening to your narrations.

If you could choose another career what would it be?
Film director.  But I get to do some of that.  I’d probably be a great party planner!

Can you tell us a tidbit from your work in the film industry?
As a wardrobe supervisor, I’ve worked with lots of famous actors and am known for always telling the story of how Antonio Banderas sent me flowers. Seriously, I tell it a lot. Wouldn’t you? 🙂
You met Antonio? *sigh* I definitely would 😀

Does your work convey a specific emotion or message?
Tons of them!  I work in lots of genres, so it really falls on the authors to define it, but I get to really dig in and make it come to life.  I love that.  I love when I get well-written, individual characters with strong voices.  I like my work to give a unique voice to each character in a book so listeners don’t have to work to figure out who is speaking.  I like to keep the audience engaged in the story and forget it’s just me and my one voice.

Who is your intended audience and why should they listen to your audiobooks?
Well, I’d like the entire world to be my audience, but I think I am most loved in the romance world.  I’m growing a fan base in the paranormal/urban fantasy world, but I just want people to enjoy the stories. That’s why I’m here.

What is next in your narrating work?
I just finished The Lost Artist by Gail Lukasik, which should be released soon and I’m currently working on Witch Hunt by Devin O’Branagan which should be out in early April.  I’m a busy girl!

Wishing you lots of busy times 😀 I am looking forward to listen to more audiobooks narrated by you. Thank you for chatting with me today!

Hope you enjoyed today’s chat and you will give a chance to Rebecca Cook’s audiobooks. I reallyreallyreally like her voice.

“One of the best narrations I’ve heard. I am really impressed with Ms. Cook’s ability to modulate her voice to fit the story, characters and emotions, especially the male voices. I really enjoyed this story of Lady Jane and her warrior Lord Ronan. Their journey to HEA was a hard one and I love how the author had me glued to the story, not once had my attention waned. I laughed, I cried, I got mad along with the characters. Really liked Lady Jane, she is smart one with a snarky lovable attitude, even though I didn’t always liked her behaviour, but learning more of her life, I understood why she behaved the way she did. Ronan is all warrior with a soft heart and he finally managed to break her defences? I was so happy for the ending, but I would have liked to see her kick some Divinity ass. Great choice in narrator Ms. Pillow, thank you for enjoyable hours of listening.”

Here is another one:

Rebecca Cook lives and works in the Spokane area, primarily in film and theater. She’s worked as an actress, director, costumer, make-up artist and stage manager with several companies throughout the region. From an early age, Rebecca knew in her heart she was a storyteller. There have been many exciting experiences that formed her professional life, including six years working in radio, founding a community theater, teaching in college theatre departments and assistant directing The Miracle Worker directed by Patty Duke. For the last several years, she has been working as the Wardrobe Supervisor and Set Costumer on over 20 feature films, as well as other commercial productions. She has recorded commercial and documentary voice-overs, as well as bringing to life over 50 audiobooks, for authors like Christine Feehan, Jennifer Ashley and Lucia St. Clair Robson. In 2012, she had the pleasure of directing the award winning short film, The Birthday, and has wrapped her second short film, Root Bound. Because she can’t get enough of the sound of her own voice, she has been asked to speak to many theater students and local professionals about her journey creating a life in the arts. She is thrilled to be spending her life doing so many things she loves.

Book 1 of The Immortals, Red Hot Property by Devin O’Branagan (a comedic/drama novel)
Book 1 of the Red Hot Series, Let the Wild Out by Madelyn Porter (erotica)
Lilith Enraptured: Divinity Warriors Book One by Michelle M. Pillow (sci-fi romance)
The Candy Cane Gang by Valorie Hein (a Christmas short story for kids in which I used my 6 nieces and nephews for the elf voices. Valorie wrote it for me so I could make this as a gift to my parents for Christmas.)

Hawk McMillan, SEAL commander, is on a lone mission. To get close to Dragan Dilaver, a Kosovo kingpin involved in drugs and arms–trafficking, Hawk helped him escape from Asia and return to his former country of Yugoslavia. Now Hawk has to discover where certain weapons have been dropped for Dilaver over the diverse regions of Montenegro, Macedonia and Albania –– not an easy task for someone unfamiliar with the territory. In order for the operation to succeed, he needs a tracker and the only available person is CIA contact agent Amber Hutchens.

Beautiful and smart, Amber has made a life for herself in Velesta, Macedonia and she is more than capable of assisting Hawk in finding the cache of hidden weapons. Despite the danger of exposure and torture, they risk everything in their mission to strike down Dilaver and his ruthless gang –– even their love.

Here is my review for the ebook: “Talk about a supercharged story, just wow. For most of the story, my heart was beating so fast logged up in my throat. This is Hawk and Amber’s book, they meet, sparks fly from the get go. Loved the way the story unfolded, the author throwing in some twists when least expected. A world of intrigue, suspense, tragedy peppered with some hot sexy scenes, some comical bantering makes this an awesome read. I highly recommend it. Thank you Gennita!!! Now onto the next book 😀 “ 5 stars

I loved it when I read it, but listening to it narrated by Kevin Foley … WOW … his voice is amazing, flexible and versatile. With so many characters, genders, nationalities, I didn’t have to figure out who’s talking, Mr. Foley did a great job. Thank you for hours of enjoyment. Looking forward to listening more.” 5 stars
