I wasn’t sure what I had expected, but it certainly wasn’t to be surprised at work on the Friday before Valentine’s Day by the deliver of two dozen of the most beautiful roses I ever seen. A handwritten note accompanied them …

Eternity for us begins in a few short days, my one and only true love.

Now what is a girl to think? Was it meant to be ominous? Should I be afraid? Or should I look forward to what was about to come with great anticipation? I have to admit the red-tipped white roses were definitely original, and I wondered at the meaning behind them. They smelled divine though, and nothing like the hothouse flowers found at most florists.

Sneaking away from work a few moments early, I arrived back at my apartment with a sigh. I was looking forward to an evening of relaxation, and this being a Friday, I could make myself comfortable without having to concern myself with going to work tomorrow. I thought about what I was going to make for dinner and what to do after on the elevator ride and walking down the hall, and was about to put my vases of flowers onto the ground when the door opened before me. It was my son.

Mom, I think you better get in here.

I was afraid to think about what could be wrong, although, with the way things were going anything was possible. I entered the apartment and almost dropped the vases. There was a golden glow on the perimeter of the apartment, and it didn’t resemble the home I had left in the morning. Where there should have been the interior of my apartment, there were multiple rooms that opened into a clearing in a forest. There were flowers everywhere; even the trees were in bloom, being fruit trees of various types. The aroma of cherry and orange blossoms seemed predominant. Dotting the landscape were rock gardens that held my favourite flowers and all were in bloom in various shades or red, pink, and white. To the side was a patio with a garden swing tucked into a private corner and surrounded by trees.

I surveyed it all, then turned my attention to the interior.  There were flowers everywhere, I moved forward to touch one and then buried my face in it, as my son quickly took the vases of roses from me. These were Starflowers, and they were growing is wild abundance throughout the rooms.

My son spoke as I drank my fill of the essences of the flowers, There is more Mom. He led me to a balcony where a table was set up and a full meal awaited. It was set for two, and there was a note set to the side of my plate.

For you, my love, I would do much more, but that must come later. This has been set up for your enjoyment until we can be together. No one but you and your son can see the things you do here. When we are one, this will cease to exist, and your son will not remember this place. Know that what will seem like days to you will feel like an eternity to me. Accept this gift as a token of my love. I await the day I hold you in my arms.
