“Why did you tell everyone we are engaged, Mr. Weston?”
He continued to stare out the window into the dark night. Cassie waited, hands clasped on her lap where she sat on the settee beside the window. He lifted the glass of scotch he held, pressed the edge against his lower lip and swallowed. The slide of his Adam’s apple drew her gaze. Her mouth suddenly went dry. She swallowed.
He lowered the glass. “I won’t bore you with the details.”
“Bore me.”
“I’m in need of a wife.”
“Get a girlfriend, propose to her.”
“I had planned to do just that here at this very party, in fact. But that’s no longer an option.” He took a deep breath. “Ms. Adams, could I interest you in a temporary position?”
“You want me to work for you?”
He nodded. “Yes. My grandfather’s health isn’t good.”
He didn’t need to elaborate. She’d witnessed the old man’s frailty.
“I would do anything to bring joy to his final days,” he said.
“You want me to plan another party?”
He gave a low laugh, but it didn’t ring with light-heartedness. “No, he’s had enough excitement. He needs to relax, to know that his legacy is safe.”
“I’m not a nurse.”
“He has a nurse. He needs an heir, a great-grandson.”
Whoa! Cassie stood. “Whatever you’re thinking, forget it.” Who exactly was he expecting to produce this heir? And she didn’t want to think about who would sire the child. She shook her head. “You’ve got the wrong girl.”
He turned. “You misunderstand. I’m sure one day I’ll have a wife and children.” He set his glass on the side table, then took two steps and stopped six inches in front of her. An unnerving heat blossomed in her chest and a flutter of butterflies flitted in her belly.
“He doesn’t have long. I’m asking if you will pretend to be my wife for the few days he has left with us.”

Stop shoving! the first Dragonette complained.

You said you were stuck in the doorway.  I was just trying to help the Dragonet replied.

Not so loud, you two.   We are going to get caught.  You know we aren’t supposed to be here.  Mom grounded us for pushing them into that hole the second Dragonette hissed.

I know, talk about a lack of gratitude.  Didn’t she realize how many Demons were hot on our tails?  The Dragonet complained.

She wouldn’t have grounded us if Dreck would have been with us. The first Dragonette added, as she was bumped from the back, and managed to pop through the doorway.  The others followed quickly in her wake.

 As the second Dragonette tumbled into the room, to the sound of the first Dragonette’s scream of pain, she quickly grabbed the first thing she could get her hands on, and stuffed it into the complaining Dragonette’s mouth.

You are going to alert everyone in the two realms of our presence here.  The second Dragonette warned.

That hurt! the first Dragonette complained, through the pillow stuffed in her maw.

Suck it up Princess, you’re a Dragon, you will feel a whole lot worse before you are grown up.  Now, what did we come for?  The second Dragonette asked.

She had barely finished speaking, when she heard the sound of glass rolling in the other room, followed by that of smacking lips and teeth.   She knew immediately what was happening there.  Their brother had found the refrigerator. 

Get out of there, do I have to watch every move the two of you make?  The second Dragonette warned her siblings.

Oh, cork it, the way you make it sound, Larien and Alyssa will hold us responsible for all the trouble they got themselves in to, forever.  The Dragonet complained.

Considering the type of trouble Alyssa is in, it is a distinct possibility. The second Dragonette responded.

We did save them from that hasty landing. The Dragonet pointed out.

Our only redeeming act. the second Dragonette responded.

Is there anything interesting to eat in there?  the first Dragonette voice came from the other room.

You forget who got to the food first, and considering the fact that you couldn’t fit through the front door, piglet, consider it just as well. The second Dragonette grouched.

You are such a spoil sport.  Always sucking up to mom for a little extra attention.  Brat!  The first Dragonette returned.

Oh, shut up, and don’t bleed on the carpet.  Neither mom nor Eniko will be happy about that if you do, the second Dragonette warned.

No, Eniko certainly won’t be happy about having blood on her carpet, nor the fact that you have eaten our meals for tomorrow I said from the other entrance to the kitchen area.  It was time I let the children know I was here, before they woke everyone within three city blocks.  They weren’t being nearly as quiet as they thought they were.

Oh, hi Eniko.  How about we bring you something yummy to take the place of your chicken?  Cake?  Ice Cream?  Potato Salad?  And by the way, did anyone ever tell you that so many vegetables is bad for a Dragon?  We could flame broil it for you?  The Dragonet suggested.

I placed a hand over my mouth, to hide the grin.  Flame broiled, I was afraid to think about what it might be.

No! I declared, with a quick shake of my head.  I will manage, I always do.

I’m sorry if I caused you trouble the Dragonet hung his head, as he apologized.  I was very hungry.

Mon hasn’t fed us in over three hours.  We are growing Dragons! the first Dragonette explained.

I’ll say you are growing, sideways.  You need to go on a diet, sister. The second Dragonette explained.

Enough! I spoke sharply, and then felt badly, as three tear filled sets of eyes were turned on me.  How do they do that, every time?

We didn’t mean anything bad.  We only wanted to give our side of this story in first. The first Dragonette replied.

Besides, we made sure no one got hurt. The Dragonet added.

Well, except for the Demons.  We managed to catch a quick snack on the way down.  The second Dragonette spoke.

Alleria is always talking about how good they taste crispy, the first Dragonette inserted  Must be an acquired taste,  I didn’t like them at all, I even ended up with indigestion from that meal  she murmured.

Probably because you ate too fast.  You never know when to quit. The second Dragonette sniffed.

Anyway, I figure all’s well that ends well, right?  The Dragonet spoke wistfully.  Alyssa did find her Life Mate.

I am not so sure that is running so smoothly at the moment.  Boy, does that girl have a temper! the first Dragonette replied.

She will get used to him hanging around, and it will all work out, you will see.  It did between Serenity and Torrent, right?  The second Dragonette pointed out.

Had to have, there are five Elflets in that family.  They had to have gotten along some of the time for that to have happened.  The Dragonet reasoned.

The sound of the front door opening and shutting alerted the three young Dragons that they had been found.  They were all dead Dragons, and so early in life.  How were they going to get out of this?  They put their most innocent expressions on their faces, and turned to look at Larien and Alyssa. It made me chuckle.  It didn’t work.  Nor were they going to be given the time to explain.

You are so busted. Alyssa informed the three young Dragons, as she walked up to the male one, and grabbed it by the ear.

Ow, you meanie, what did I ever do to you?  The Dragonet complained.

Don’t get me started. Alyssa warned the Dragonet, as she led him out of the door.

Larien bowed to me and explained, Half the Dragon Army is out looking for these three, and I bet they have cleaned out your fridge.  I will see that restocked by morning.  I would appreciate a list of anything you would like, that you haven’t had for a long time.  It is the least we can do, under the circumstances.

Before I could respond, Larien took the other two Dragonettes out of the house, yipping and grumbling all the way.

Hey, easy on the ears.

Did you have to push me?  I am sure I would have fit through the door this time.  You didn’t give me time to eat, and it has been forever since I last had a meal.  I am wasting away.  Ow.  You are so cruel.

She loves me best, see, I told you.

You are such a dimwad, she love Dreck best.  Ow, I didn’t mean that mom, honestly.

Oh boy! I let out a sigh of relief. Not sure what would have happened if the girls didn’t show up. Though I must admit I am curious to hear the story from their point of view. I feel sorry for the little Dragons though, they are just babies. I hope they will be ok and their punishment will not be to harsh.

I really enjoyed reading this book and the cover is beautiful, fits their story. Their journey is not easy, full of danger and were some tense moments where I sat up and was chewing my nails… and then there are the lighter moments for which Ms. Abraham is known for, where the tension is broken and I found myself laughing out loud. I was so happy for Larien when it was revealed that Rothliel is her Life Mate, a very well-matched couple in every way. Larien’s sister, Alyssa finds her Life Mate too in this book, but like all Eagle Claw women, she is not easy to succumb to the bond LOL Be prepared for a few surprises especially one that reveals something that nobody knew about in the Elven Empire and that brings hope that the Elves will be triumphant over the Demon Horde.
